OPAL (Older People’s Action in the Locality) Activities June 2013

OPAL (Older People’s Action in the Locality) is part of the Leeds
Neighbourhood Network scheme.  Membership costs £10 per year. We have over 680 members and 90 volunteers, aged 16 to 85, plus a staff team of four.

On the recent coach party to Saltaire, we were able to see at Salt’s Mill, and walk alongside, the David Hockney current exhibition of 25 trees in different seasons – a 27ft long panorama, as well as ipad pictures and life-size oil portraits and Yorkshire landscapes.

Leeds University students gave OPAL members a fantastic Tea Party complete with jazz band and a magician. Forthcoming Summer outings include a picnic at Bolton Abbey on 3rd June, a day out in Bowness in Windermere on Wed 19th June; plus a Southport trip on Wed 2nd July and the popular seaside trip to Scarborough on Wed 21st August.  All trips depart and return to the Farrar Lane Car Park behind ASDA.

The Ireland Wood Meeting Point at St Paul’s Church Hall, Raynel Drive LS16 6BS, got off to a good start with the Weetwood Councillors, and Revd Linda Ludkin & Revd Ian White in this partnership with OPAL. In May, music students from Ralph Thoresby entertained us with Daniel on keyboard, Edna on guitar, singing along with Molly and teacher Ms Liles. We meet on Thursdays 2-4pm 13th & 27th June. All welcome, £1 entry-you do not need to be a member of OPAL.

The Creative Writing Group is also open to all and meets next on Mon 19th June 2-3.30pm at Holt Park Library. We are a small friendly group led by Librarian Kit Lardner.

Coffee Afternoons continue at Tinshill Hub, Silk Mill Drive LS16 6DX on Fridays 1.30-3.30pm.

The Men’s Group meet on Mon 3rd June for a day out 11am-4pm. at Lotherton Hall to see the Bird Gardens & enjoy the café & company.

National Changes to Permitted Development – Urgent

Today (30th May), new permitted development rights come into force across the country allowing homeowners and businesses/ developers greater freedoms to extend and change their premises without the need for planning permission.

In brief the main changes are as follows;

–  Householders can erect single storey rear extensions up to 8m from the rear wall of the original detached dwelling house and up to 6m on other types of houses up to 30th May 2016 i.e. for 3 years.  It does not apply in Conservation Areas and involves a neighbour notification procedure which we will do and an assessment of impact if objections are received.  If objections are not received from adjoining neighbours then the extension is permitted development.  The change doubles the length of the existing limit of 4m for a detached house and 3m for other house types.  The limit on not using more than 1/2 your garden remains in place.  I have attached how the neighbour notification procedure works for information.  Continue reading →

A660 Joint Council Meeting – Monday 20th May at 7.15pm

We have been informed that there will be a meeting of the A660 Joint Council at 7.15pm on Monday 20th May in the Monkbridge Room at HEART, Bennett Road Headingley LS6 3HN.

The meeting is to discuss the status of the standing committee, qualifications for membership of the A660 Joint Council and meetings with councillors, and should be over by 8.15pm.
