On Friday 6th July, members meet up with the Lord Mayor of Leeds at Cookridge Methodist Church Hall 1.45- 4.30pm for OPAL’s 10th Birthday Celebration and AGM plus more cakes and entertainment by the Musical Theatre Group Memory Lane. 

The next trip is to Bowness in Windermere on Wednesday 29 June, 9.30am- 6pm. Some members are planning a walk by the lake, others plan a cruise to Ambleside. There is a waiting list for this event.

The Men’s Group are off to Yorkshire Air Museum on Tues 12th June.  On Mon 2nd July they are having lunch at the Britannia followed by a visit to Lineham Farm, Eccup. The Craft Group meet1.30-3.30pm Fri 1st & 15th June in the OPAL Office.

The Creative Writing Group meets in Holt Park Library, 2pm-3.30pm Mon 18th June. Anybody can join us, you do not need to be an OPAL member.

Minor Service Changes in June

There are a few minor service changes to bring to your attention.  These are:

• New services 370 & 371 Rawthorpe – Huddersfield – start on 19 June.
• Service 923 Tadcaster – Otley  – starts on 6 June.
• Service 951 –Day Tripper  service  – starts on 2 June until 27 August
• First are operating a reduced service during Jubilee week.  On Wednesday 6 to Friday 8 June, First services 40, 51, 56, 72, 503 and 521 will be running the same timetables that applied during Easter week.

However, there is much more to be done; it is the problems – broken kerbs, fallen headstones, churned up corners, that one sees, not the improvements. The appointment of a new head gardener, Chris Raines, at the same time as the group was formed plus the relatively mild winter, allowing routine maintenance to continue more or less uninterrupted during the winter, has also made a big impact.

Shortly after formation the Friends drew up a list of improvements they wish to see. These have been discussed with cemetery officials and some have been introduced. A contract window cleaner has been appointed for the glass corridor between the two chapels. The appearance of the grounds by the entrance/chapel area has noticeably improved. We are told that the reinstatement of the gates, decoration of the waiting room and tidying up of the vandalised area of the Victorian cemetery are imminent.

The Friend’s summer programme of walks aims to share some of the cemetery’s history. The walks, which must be booked in advance are:

There have been two reported attempted house burglaries in the Adel area this week. Both incidents occurred on Adel Park Gardens. The offenders were unsuccessful and entry was not gained. Arrests have been made – see Arrests of note below. Enquiries are ongoing.

One reported theft from a vehicle this week. This occurred at Lawnswood Cemetery. The front passenger window was smashed and property stolen.
