RESIDENTS of a Leeds village were last night gathering in force to show their opposition to a major housing development on a trio of local green fields.
People power has already led to significant amendments to the originally planned 370-home project for Church Fields in East Ardsley, South Leeds.
The number of proposed homes has been slashed to 299 after more than 330 people submitted official objections about impact on infrastructure and the size of the development. Developer Barratt Homes has also reserved two hectares of land to be used as a school.
The updated proposals will be debated by Leeds council’s City Plans Panel on Thursday, with a full decision later this year.
Local Labour councillor Lisa Mulherin said: “It is positive that the developers have responded to some of the concerns. In particular, it is good to see that they have reduced number of houses and accepted the need for a new primary school.

At last months Adel Association meeting Wyn Davies, WNWhL, Martin Wright from Park & Countryside. LCC and Francis Garbutt attended to listen to views on the issue of a proposal which has been made by some Adel residents that an area of land on Sir George Martin Drive opposite Wayland Croft be developed into an Adel Village Community Garden (see attached map).
As some of you may be aware Adel Crag Community Association have been looking for a play area for over 30 years but unfortunately have always been turned down by the Council based on both safety and a suitable location.
After a long debate at the Adel Association meeting it was confirmed by Martin Wright from Park & Countryside, LCC that the Sir George Martin Drive site would be suitable for a Community Garden.
Last year Adel Crag Community Association submitted a funding bid to WNWhL Area Panel for a Community Garden to be situated by Sir George Martin Drive so we are pleased to hear that the site would be more suitable for a Community Garden.
The idea of the Community Garden project is to make it educational so it benefits the diverse strands of our community, and would also give a feeling of refreshing tranquility and an absence of tension or worry. In addition, the aspect from Wayland Supported Housing Scheme would look more attractive, and enable some residents to get involved in maintaining the Community garden as some of their properties have no gardens of their own.
Adel Crag Community Association fully supports WNWhL’s idea of a Community garden, and will be supporting options 1 & 2 on the questionnaire as a fantastic opportunity for both the Association and residents to be involved.

Today (30th May), new permitted development rights come into force across the country allowing homeowners and businesses/ developers greater freedoms to extend and change their premises without the need for planning permission.
In brief the main changes are as follows;
– Householders can erect single storey rear extensions up to 8m from the rear wall of the original detached dwelling house and up to 6m on other types of houses up to 30th May 2016 i.e. for 3 years. It does not apply in Conservation Areas and involves a neighbour notification procedure which we will do and an assessment of impact if objections are received. If objections are not received from adjoining neighbours then the extension is permitted development. The change doubles the length of the existing limit of 4m for a detached house and 3m for other house types. The limit on not using more than 1/2 your garden remains in place. Further to previous post 6th February with regard to a public meeting about the proposals hosted by David Wilson Homes at Bodington Hall.
At the meeting we were informed that they plan to build 106 (3-4 bed-roomed houses) costing less than half a million. This is to include 4 blocks of 3 affordable houses (12 houses).
We were also told that the green spaces at the top left hand side and the bottom right hand side of the plan will be retained by the University.
The main concerns were traffic congestion on Adel Lane. David Wilson Homes mentioned that they are currently looking at the traffic issue with highways.
