OPAL ACTIVITIES (Older People’s Action in the Locality) supports the over 60s living in Leeds 16.

On Wed 8th July, we enjoyed a great day outdoors at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. We were amazed as we walked round Leeds-born Sculptor, Thomas Houseago’s, Large Owl and made our way to Tom Frost’s Wild Collection in the Garden Gallery. We looked at the clockwork birds and other colourful creatures, then made our way to the Iron Tree by the recently-restored 18th c.  chapel. Inside we viewed a simple Chinese exhibition by Al Weiwei  and were invited to “sit on 17th c. Fairytale chairs and consider freedom, refuge and sanctuary”

On 15th Aug 10am-4pm there is a visit to Newby Hall, built 1690, and Gardens.

On Fri 5th Sept a trip to Salford Quays 9.30am-5pm is planned & on Tues 16th Sept, a shorter trip 11.30am– 5pm is to 17th c. East Riddlesden Hall & Gardens.

In October on Wed 29th we are visiting the Millennium Gallery and Botanical Gardens in Sheffield.

On Mon 11th August OPAL Men’s Group  are visiting  the Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival 10am-4.30pm. Take a picnic or eat in one of the cafes. On Wed 10th Sept, 11am-4pm the group are going to the Washburn Heritage Centre, overlooking Swinsty Reservoir.

OPAL, St Paul’s Church & Weetwood Councillors in partnership together, run the fortnightly  Ireland Wood Thursday Coffee Afternoons, held at St Paul’s, Raynel Drive, LS16 6BS 1.30-3.30pm, are open to all and cost £1 for refreshments: 14 & 28 Aug,  11 & 25 Sept.

The Friday Coffee Afternoons continue 1.30-3.30pm at The Hub, Silk Mill Drive LS16 6DX.

There will be no activities at the Stables during August. Table Tennis will start again in Sept—contact OPAL for details.

The Creative Writing Group meets on  Mon 18th Aug, & on 15th Sept. , all are welcome at Holt Park Library 2pm-3.30pm
