RECENT BURGLARY

Please see information below, received via our ward Councillors, and which may be of interest to you.

VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ……..

AT 11:00 LAST NIGHT TWO MEN KNOCKED ON THE DOOR OF A LADY WHO LIVES IN HORSFORTH PRETENDING TO BE FROM THE WATERBOARD AND CLAIMING A PIPE HAD BURST OUTSIDE.  ONCE THEY GAINED ENTRY TO THE PROPERTY THEY RANSACKED IT TAKING MONEY AND JEWELLRY AND LEAVING THE RESIDENT VERY UPSET.

This is has been a very distressing incident, we are informing you not to cause alarm but to help you make sure you do not fall victim to a similar crime.

What you can do to protect yourself:

If you have a chain always use it when answering the door until you are happy the caller is genuine.

Ensure other external doors are locked before opening your front door, this prevents criminals working together to use “distraction techniques” where one will come to your front door while an accomplice will try to gain access through a side or back door.

If someone claims to be from ANY utility company (or similar organisation) check if they are genuine before allowing them access to your home.   All genuine companies are aware of scams such as these and so will NOT be offended if you take steps to check the identity of callers, in fact they will encourage you to do this.

To check a callers identity DO NOT call the telephone number on their own ID card, if the card is fake the telephone number will be too.  Use the telephone number on a recent bill or from a telephone directory.

IF IN DOUBT KEEP THEM OUT

If you are on facebook you can follow the Safer Project, this is a Leeds based project working with West Yorkshire Police to prevent scams and frauds.

Yorkshire Water have a phone line 0800 1 38 78 78, you can use this to check the identity of any callers or set up a password which will be given to any genuine callers from them.  If a caller does not know the password you know they are not genuine.

If you have any specific concerns you can phone the local police crime number on 101.

If there is a crime in progress phone 999.

As ever we are always here to provide advice and support.
