£1m funding to help rid Leeds of its pothole hell

PotholesLEEDS has been awarded almost £1m from a new Government cash pot to help repair roads damaged by recent severe weather – and rid the city of the blight of potholes.

The money is part of a £10.3m fund for Yorkshire authorities, which has been made available to help with much needed road repairs following the wettest winter on record.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “Damage to roads causes misery for drivers and local communities and the severe weather over the last few months has made the problem worse.

“This extra money will help make a real difference to the millions of road users and residents across Yorkshire who rely on local roads, giving them safer and smoother journeys.”

Leeds will receive £949,426 of funding from the new fund. Wakefield will be handed £487,955 and Kirklees will get £606,663.

Leeds trolleybus: New plans revealed – YEP

Trolleybus“TRANSPORT bosses have revealed details of the revised blueprint that they hope will win over Leeds’s trolleybus doubters.
The Yorkshire Evening Post has been given advance access to a 100-page, 30,000-word ‘statement of case’ that will be published in full online tomorrow.

It is one of a series of documents that have been prepared by trolleybus chiefs for the public inquiry that will decide the fate of their £250m scheme.

The documents set out more clearly than ever before how some journeys on the New Generation Transport (NGT) system would be nearly 40 per cent faster than those made by existing bus services.

They also reveal that the network would include a significantly greater amount of bus and cycle lane provision than previously thought.

Another section in the documents outlines how a £20m funding gap that has been hanging over the scheme would be filled by borrowing, to be paid back by operating revenues.

Other ideas in the updated paperwork include:

* The creation of a 3,500 sq m public park in Headingley;

* Environmental improvements to Hyde Park Corner and Monument Moor;

* Increased levels of planting to replace trees chopped down to make way for the system.

Jointly led by Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire passenger transport authority Metro, NGT has come under fire from opponents who claim it offers poor value for money and would damage the environment and people’s quality of life…”

Leeds City Council parking charge u-turn

Leeds City Council ParkingLeeds city council has been forced to make a u-turn over a plan to charge more than 20,000 people £50 a year to park outside their own homes.

The climbdown comes after a court ruled a London council’s bid to raise its charges for a similar scheme illegal – and after more than 4,000 people responded to a consultation and slammed the idea.

The authority spends £164,000 a year on running existing free residents’ parking permit schemes, with 21,374 people holding permits. The aim of the new levy was to offset those costs in the light of budget pressures.
