Burglar Warns Public To Protect Their Homes

A convicted burglar has spoken out to warn students returning from the Christmas break to protect their new gadgets.

According to 33-year-old Peter Findlay who has served 4 years in prison for burglary, students are a ‘ridiculously easy’ target, particularly in January when student accommodation is filled with new laptops, iPods and other expensive equipment.

Peter is now working with West Yorkshire Probation and West Yorkshire Police to turn his life around and has agreed to take part in a short video advising the public of the simple measures they can take to protect their belongings and avoid becoming victims of burglary.

In the video, Peter explains how student homes in particular can be easy to break into thanks to unlocked or poorly maintained doors and windows and expensive equipment being left on display.

West Yorkshire Police is seeing a reduction in burglaries with 485 fewer burglaries in November 2011 compared to the same month in the previous year. However, January traditionally sees a rise in the number of reports.

The Force is keen for people to take note of these simple crime prevention tips;
Lock all of your doors and windows even when you’re in.
Remove keys from all locks.
Property-mark all of your expensive items using a UV pen.
Keep your belongings hidden in a safe and secure place. Do not leave them on show!

Chief Superintendent Simon Willsher, head of the Force’s Local Policing Support Department, said: “Every year people’s homes are targeted by burglars who are on the lookout for Christmas gifts and sale bargains.

“Some simple steps to keep expensive items out of sight and prevent easy access to your home will deter criminals. We also encourage neighbours to look out for and repeat suspicious activity.

“This latest video provides a first hand account of what burglars look for and why students in particular are so susceptible to becoming a burglary victim. It is important to listen to and take note of what Peter is saying. He knows as well as anyone about what a burglar looks for.

“I encourage everyone to watch this brief video and not let a burglar ruin your new year.”

Neighbourhood Police Update W/c 2nd January 2012

Crime
We have only had one report of burglary this week in the Adel area, this occurred on Long Causeway. The offender has used mole grips to attack the rear patio door and gained access to the property. Once inside they have stolen various items including the vehicle from the driveway. This vehicle is still outstanding at this moment in time but enquiries are ongoing.

There have not been any other reports of any other crimes this week in Adel. However, we did receive a call from a neighbourhood watch coordinator on Kingsley Drive in Adel stating that he had seen a male in his rear garden looking through his window at approximately 1800hrs on 06/01/2012. The male had made off over grassland near the property, police units flooded the area to conduct a search but no male was seen matching the description. No offences had taken place at the property but please be vigilant and call the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously at all.

ASB
We have not had any reports of anti-social behaviour this week for the Adel area and we have not witnessed any unruly behaviour either on our patrols.

Leeds NHS Urgent Care Consultation

Please see email below in respect of Leeds NHS Urgent Care Consultation which you may be interested in contributing to.

We are writing to tell you that, following changes that were made to the urgent care services in 2009, we would now like to hear from people about where they think the best locations are for urgent care in Leeds.

Urgent Care is for when you have minor accidents or unexpected health problems and need help within the next few hours, but it is not an emergency or life threatening. Important progress has already been made in improving the health of the local population, but there is still working to be done. NHS Leeds want to make further improvements to urgent care services to build on improvements already made in 2009.

We are consulting with people for 14 weeks, from Monday 5 December 2011 until Sunday 4 March 2012, as we would like as many views as possible.

This booklet is also available online at www.leeds.nhs.uk/consultations.

The responses we receive will help to shape the future of urgent health care services in Leeds, delivered from the right locations, which are convenient and accessible to the majority of people.

We are grateful for your cooperation.
