The three steps that pose a ‘health and safety’ risk to Leeds bin men

Brown Bin CollectionBin men have refused to collect a disabled pensioner’s rubbish for “health and safety” reasons – because it stands at the top of three steps.

Former delivery man Wilson Burdis, 67, from Nepshaw Lane in Morley, says his brown bin – which carries garden waste – has not been emptied for eight weeks.

Mr Burdis, who suffers from a severe lung complaint, said: “They’re telling me they’re not allowed to take it down the three steps to the street for health and safety reasons. I just think it’s ridiculous.

“I used to have to carry fridges, washing machines and all sorts up and down steps. If I’d ever have made that kind of excuse I’d have been laughed at.”

Adel WW1 Three Events 4th August 2014

Adel Church 011 (1)On Monday, 4th Aug, we had a full church at Adel for a Community WW1 Commemorative Service at 11am, led by Revd Ian White. Then in the afternoon, the church was full again for a moving performance of local WW1 letters, and poems & readings by community members and Revd White. This was followed by war grave walks around the 6-acre Adel Churchyard in the sunshine. In the evening we met up again with Revd White at 10pm at Adel Memorial Hall (next to the church) for a candlelit performance involving more people from Adel Sports & Social Club. We represented and remembered the 18 men (including Mark, Roger & William Draper, the 3 sons of Adel Rector William Draper) whose names are on the Adel WW1 Memorial, ending with a single candle burning at 11pm. We prayed for peace together and joined in singing ‘Keep the home fires burning’. The evening performance included these words written in the Adel Journal years ago:

‘if this world is to be made into a better place in which to live, it’s the type of spirit we see displayed so often in community work that will achieve it.

Watch: Leeds OAP road-menders roll out the fighting spirit

PotholesA GANG of feisty pensioners are rolling out the resilience – and a tonne of Tarmac – to repair their pothole ridden road themselves.

The six OAPs, who have an average age of 75, pledged to get the job done themselves as Leeds City Council highways bosses say they do not have to carry out repairs as it is an ‘unadopted’ road.

The neighbours from Crawshaw Gardens in Pudsey bought a tonne of Tarmac and some black tar sealant to maintain holes on their access. Armed with a heavy duty concrete garden roller, shovels, rakes and brushes they set to work yesterday.

David Horn, 77, who is married to Barbara, said: “We decided enough is enough. There has been much discussion with Leeds City Council over the years and although it is an unadopted road, we feel they could help us out.
