Watch: Leeds OAP road-menders roll out the fighting spirit

PotholesA GANG of feisty pensioners are rolling out the resilience – and a tonne of Tarmac – to repair their pothole ridden road themselves.

The six OAPs, who have an average age of 75, pledged to get the job done themselves as Leeds City Council highways bosses say they do not have to carry out repairs as it is an ‘unadopted’ road.

The neighbours from Crawshaw Gardens in Pudsey bought a tonne of Tarmac and some black tar sealant to maintain holes on their access. Armed with a heavy duty concrete garden roller, shovels, rakes and brushes they set to work yesterday.

David Horn, 77, who is married to Barbara, said: “We decided enough is enough. There has been much discussion with Leeds City Council over the years and although it is an unadopted road, we feel they could help us out.

Grass Cutting Performance

Wayland Estate Due to a number of complaints received from local residents regarding grass cutting performance please see response recently received from Cllr Barry Anderson for your attention.

Dear Councillor,

The Executive Member for Environment and Parks has asked me to provide an update on the briefing I sent you on the 5th June regarding maintenance of grass verges and spaces around dwellings.

Our contractor Continental Landscapes Ltd has responded positively to our concerns and their recovery plan has seen an increasing level of productivity helped by the improving weather in recent days. Clearly there are still areas of grass and verges that are not at the standard we would expect for this time of year, however the position is improving and we continue to press Continental for attention to address these problems.  They continue to work evenings and weekends (including the forthcoming weekend) at no additional cost to the council to reduce the interval between mowing, and we expect that they will have achieved a 10 working day cycle at the end of June in line with the recovery plan.

Once again I apologise for the additional enquiries regarding grass cutting issues that you have had during this period.

Kind regards

Chief Officer Parks and Countryside

Campaign group joins fight to stop Leeds housing scheme

Housing campaign group membersAn influential pressure group has joined the fight against plans for a major housing development on the doorstep of a quiet community in Leeds.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) says the proposed construction of up to 700 homes to the east of Scholes would be “wholly out of proportion” with the size of the village.

It also argues that the development would be unsustainable due to “poor public transport connections, inadequate local amenities and huge volumes of additional road traffic generation”.

And today villagers told of their hopes that the CPRE’s intervention could help convince Leeds City Council to give the scheme the thumbs-down.

Scholes resident and community planning expert George Hall said: “I think this could turn out to be a really significant step. Firstly, because this is the CPRE we are talking about.

“Secondly, it hasn’t just said this because of what it has read or seen on some plans.
